Frequently Asked Questions

Disability Insurance in 2026

On January 1, 2026, SMP transitioned administration of Life & AD&D, Disability and Leaves, and Voluntary STD from Reliance Matrix to The Standard.

  • If you began a short term disability leave before January 1, 2026, your leave will continue to be administered by Reliance Matrix.
  • If you began an FMLA or PFL leave (such as maternity or paternity leave) before January 1, 2026, administration of your leave transitioned to The Standard.
  • Please contact The Standard directly if you need to report a leave.

You may be eligible for Short Term Disability (STD) if you are absent from work for more than three days in a row due to an illness or injury that keeps you out of work. If your disability is approved, the benefit payable is $170 per week for up to 26 weeks.

Salary Continuation

SMP will continue your salary while out of work on STD. The number of weeks you receive 100% of your pay depends on your years of service.

After your 100% pay period ends, all employees receive 60% of their salary through week 26, when Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefits begin for eligible employees.

For information about your salary continuation benefit, contact your local Human Resources representative.

If your disability continues beyond the STD benefit period, you may be eligible for Long Term Disability (LTD). If you are approved to continue receiving disability benefits, your benefit will begin after 180 days of disability.

You are eligible to receive up to 60% of your monthly covered earnings. The maximum monthly benefit is $15,000. (Note: Your benefit may be reduced by other income you may be receiving during your disability period.)

SMP will keep you active as an employee on benefits for up to six (6) months. If you are unable to return to work following this time, this may result in your termination.

In addition to any disability benefits, you may be eligible for up to 12 weeks of job-protected, unpaid leave under The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) for certain family and medical reasons. To file a disability or FMLA claim, contact The Standard at 1-866-756-8116.

Reporting your leave on time is important so your benefits and pay continue smoothly. If you think you’ll be out for more than three days, please follow the steps below.

When

Action

As soon as possible

Step 1: Notify your supervisor and/or your local Human Resources Department. You do not need to discuss private health issues when providing this information.

Within 30 days of your leave date

Step 2: To file a claim, call or text The Standard at 1-866-756-8116 or log onto standard.com/absence (Note: First-time users will need to create an account. The webpage has a step-by-step guide on how to do this). Waiting longer than 30 days to notify The Standard of your disability may delay your benefits past the end of the waiting period.

By the deadline provided by The Standard

Step 3: Submit the requested documentation to The Standard by email to absence@standard.com or by fax to 1-866-751-5174. You may also submit forms by mail to Standard Insurance Company, Employee Benefits Division, PO Box 3877, Portland, OR 97208

* If you work in California, Puerto Rico or Rhode Island, you must also initiate your disability claim with the state. Matrix will provide you with the appropriate state disability forms or you can get them directly from that state.

Decision Timeline

It will take approximately one week to make a claim decision once The Standard receives your completed claim application. If The Standard has not made a decision within one week, you will be notified as to why.

Detailed claim communications will be sent by mail. You also have the option to sign up to receive text message alerts. If you sign up, you will receive one-way text messages when The Standard receives key documents and when there are certain changes to your claim status.

Text STATUS to 53284 and you will be enrolled. Refer to the Filing a Claim FAQ for additional details regarding message and data rates.
